We in the GPU have become quite immune (with counselling) to the cries from some that genetics is ‘just another case of specialist pleading’ in healthcare. Just reading a few stories on the Telling Stories website serves as a reminder, if one is needed, of why it is relevant and important. We know we have a challenge in changing attitudes, and that this takes time.

I did get a little downhearted last week though. My daughter Mairwen had informed me the previous week that her Year 9 class had just started learning about genetics in their science lessons. It seemed a matter of days later that she told me they had now finished the subject. “That was quick” I commented. “Yes” she replied. “But the teacher said that genetics was boring anyway”.
