» Calling all users of genetic services in Wales...

An event at the University Hospital of Wales (Cardiff) on November 21, will be looking to find out what people think are the most important consequences of using genetic services. If you or your family has been referred to the All Wales Medical Genetics Service or you provide support to those who have been referred, then this day is for you. More information is available from the flyer below. Findings from the day will be informing the PhD work of HESAS student Christalla Pithara.

» Grief, secrecy, guilt and joy

Webcast – open to all. On Thursday April 10th 15.00 – 16.00hrs (British Summer Time) the University of Plymouth will present a webcast on the topic: Impact of a genetic condition on the family: grief, secrecy guilt and joy.

Heather Skirton (who we work a great deal with us here at the GPU) will facilitate. Heather is a Reader in Health Genetics and Deputy Head for Research, Innovation and Enterprise in the School of Nursing and Community Studies. She is a visiting Prof at Glamorgan, a Past President of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics and currently Co-Chair of the European Network of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors.

During the webcast, work will be presented on the way individuals and families react and cope when a person in the family is diagnosed with a genetic condition or family members are at risk. This is relevant to the majority of health and social care professionals, who will at some time care for individuals with a genetic condition in the course of their work in primary, secondary, tertiary and community settings.

To participate, go to www.plymouth.ac.uk/health/webcasts and click on the relevant orange box. You should type in your firstname and lastname (eg rayjones) as your username and then tick the guest box (no password needed). You must have a computer with broadband Internet connection that can play sound (speakers or headphones). No microphone is needed, your participation will be via typing into a ‘chat room’.
