We are in the last stages of the countdown to the Sustainable Development Workshop in Mbale (6th to 8th July).
31 staff and students from Glamorgan are visiting Mbale. Several other Welsh folk with an interest in the proceedings are on the trip, including Sarah Jenkins, a student from John the Baptist School in Aberdare. Sarah will also have a work experience week with a Ugandan Aids Charity, UWCM.
Sustainable Development is in danger of becoming a watchword that everyone evokes but that has little practical value. Behind the Workshop is the idea that sustainable development needs to be earthed in specific regional and sectoral contexts.
This workshop will be attended by over 100 key government, NGO and community representatives from across Mbale Region as well as academics and other “expets”. There must be a real danger that it will produce tangible results!
Given the abject poverty in the region and the failure of much government-to-government development work, let’s hope so.
