The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), in funding partnership with the Office of the Third Sector (OTS) and The Barrow Cadbury Trust, are inviting applications for a Capacity Building Cluster on the Economic Impact of the Third Sector.

In January 2008 the funders launched an initiative to enable the bringing together of a critical mass of research expertise, resources and intellectual leadership to support research of the highest international standing, to provide top quality analysis independent of government, political party or any other vested interest, and provide the necessary evidence base to better understand key Third Sector issues and underpin policy and practice. To date, this initiative has established the Third Sector Research Centre and two associated Capacity Building Clusters.

A third Cluster will complement the other investments by focussing on the Economic Impact of the Third Sector. The core aim of this cluster is to create a new generation of high quality researchers committed to the co-production of knowledge and its application to the Third Sector. The Cluster will receive a four year grant which it is anticipated will cover an indicative portfolio of the following activities:

Three year CASE studentships;
Two year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) awards;
Three month placement fellows and/or student internships;
A voucher scheme for their region.

Based on the funding of these activities, the total maximum grant available is £800,000. There will be some flexibility to vary the distribution of this funding across the portfolio of activities.

Applications must be submitted no later than 4pm on Friday 8th May. The application form can only be submitted manually.
